Timo Bracht gives advice for Hawaii
von Timo Bracht, am 16.09.2009
The flight will be long, very long. Try to have a relaxed start of your journey and be able to look forward for the next days and weeks.
I always try not to sleep during the flight and it works until the point when we are two hours away from Kona. You will be absolutely overtired but at least able to sleep until the next morning afterwards.
Probably there will be no food or drinks at the appartment. Prepare yourself and buy enough water and a snack for the night at the airport.
Don’t exaggerate referring to the training in the first 2-3 days. Start easily: swim at the morning near the quay and run or cycle for an hour in the afternoon.
Train early at Kona with the material you will use within the competition. (Do not glue tubed tires the evening before the check in, break in the shoes and the sox etc.)
Do not have a race at the Alii Drive unitl the airport at the Queen K Highway. There is too much traffic.
Do not be misled by the speed of the other runners at the Alii Drive. Run slowly and long or faster and a short distance.
Supply yourself at home with a good supplement of mineral material you can take with you. (You should start to take it 3-5 days before the flight.) Ask for advices in the pharmacy.
It is a big advantage to hace a water bottle system at the handle bar. Make sure to organize it early and get used to it.
Do not worry about a little cold after the arrival. Until the competition starts everything will be ok.
You really should practice the daily swim training at the quay to get used to the swim distance.
Do not underestimate the wind at the cycle route. Most of the time the „Mumuku“ begins far outside (Scenic Point). Most of the athletes do not cycle that far away in the training.
Remember your number in English and call it out to the volunteers in the transition area at the Special Aid point (additionally raise your hand).
It is necessary to take with you a belt for all of your water bottles. You will need it during the training run.
Doing your training run at the Alii Drive you can have a look at the interim times. At the seaside you will see the green signs for the miles. Convert the average at home.
If you have got questions go the the Hannes House (Lymans Bay House). Ask everything, the boys and girls nearly can answer all of your questions and really help.
Be sure to keep your eyes open beside the Triathlon Hype. There are nice small things at Kailua Kona.
